Brinks home security system disabled following a power outage.?
My Brinks home-security system was working fine until a long power-outage drained the system battery. When the power came back, the battery eventually recharged, but the keypad display remains blank. The buttons beep when you press them, but nothing works.
I called Brinks and they said this behavior is by design. They eluded to the fact the system could be reactivated over the phone line … but they ended the call because I’m not paying monthly to have the system monitored.
Does anyone know how to re-activate this system?
How much does home security alarm system cost for my home?
For ex. ADT How much is the installation fee and monthly fee?
Best Wireless Home Security System?
Ok so we are moving next month into a house that we will be renting. Unfortunately, ADT & Brinks dont let renters use their services…which is ok because we dont plan to rent the house forever, so their products would probably be a waste of money anyway.
Ive been online FOREVER it feels like, looking for a home security system we can install ourselves. Ive heard wireless is the easiest way to go? We just dont want to have to pay a professional to come out and do it. I have NO idea how to find what Im looking for or what products actually do what we want them to do. So Im hoping that maybe somebody can steer me in the right direction if I describe what I hope to find…..
Like I said, wireless would be great. I want something not too difficult to use….we would like to be able to monitor all the windows and doors in the house (there isnt very many). And MOST OF ALL, I want something LOUD. Id want the siren/alarm to be able to be heard from the next door neighbors houses….I figure, if the alarm isnt very loud, what good does it do? Im hoping that if (God forbid) anyone ever tried to break in, the alarm would scare them away if they know everyone can hear it and cops may very well be on their way….
I have a 4yr old son and I want to do anything I can to assure a sense of safety in our house.
Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Does anybody know of a system that I should purchase?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
Randy’s Burglar Alarm Stops a Thief!
Many people don’t appreciate a home security system until it actually goes off. That’s the story I got from my next door neighbor at four in the morning a week ago this past Friday. Torn from a deep sleep by the klaxon-like baying of Randy’s burglar alarm – Randy’s my neighbor – I wandered over to his house about 30 minutes after the police had gone. While the police hadn’t made an arrest, Randy’s home security system did the job, scaring away the burglar before he had entered the house.
If what happened to Randy isn’t enough to convince you that home security systems can pay for themselves many times over, consider the fact that insurance companies will substantially discount insurance premiums for a private home outfitted with a security system or burglar alarm. My own insurance company discounts my home owner’s policy by twenty percent because I have a security system installed and monitored by a nationally certified company. The savings make a big difference in defraying the cost of my alarm system.
Home security systems come in many different flavors and are able to detect events ranging from forced entry to smoke, fire and even high levels of carbon monoxide. A plain-vanilla setup consists of a keypad, motion detectors and a link to a monitoring center that contacts the police or fire department if the alarm is triggered. Costs for a basic system usually amount to about one hundred dollars for installation and then a monthly monitoring fee that normally ranges between thirty and forty dollars.
Finding the right company to install your home security system needn’t be a tedious job. You’ll usually have a number of friends and relatives who already have security systems installed and they’ll be happy to make a personal recommendation. If you don’t know someone who already has a system, take time to visit the website of the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFFA). They’ll be happy to supply information about home security systems and recommend companies in your area that install home security systems and provide monitoring services.
Depending on your location, your list of companies will probably include such nationally known names as ADT and Brink’s Home Security, along with many local companies. Try to narrow the list to three to five companies located in your area. Good selection criteria include membership in the NBFAA, as well as participation in the industry’s Installation Quality (IQ) Certification Program. The IQ program gives consumers a yardstick for identifying alarm companies that are active in quality and false alarm issues.
Once you’ve narrowed your list, call each company and arrange a meeting with a company representative in your home. Price isn’t necessarily the most important issue in selecting the company to install and monitor your security system. Here’s a quick checklist with questions to ask and things to do:
How many years has the company been in business? Longer is better!
Will it monitor your home security system’s operation twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year? Make sure they’re working 24/7/365!
Does it have a backup power supply so it can monitor your home even when the power goes down? A good company will continue to operate, even when the lights go out.
Does the company have an in-house training program and are employees well-trained so they are able to correctly install, monitor and service your system should repairs be necessary? Make sure the answer to this question is yes!
Finally, have the representative survey your home and explain in detail your security needs and options. Don’t forget to get a written list of recommendations and a quote in writing for the cost of the security system and monitoring services.
Once you’ve met with the companies on your list, compare equipment, services and pricing. Then, make the call and have your system installed. And don’t forget to cut your premiums by telling your insurance company that you’ve installed an alarm system.
You’ll probably never need your home security system, but you’ll sleep better for having it, just like me and my neighbor Randy.

What do you think of glass break detectors for a home alarm system? I’m also getting each outside door wired.
No monitoring system. What do you think of this plan? I mainly want to know how well the glass break detectors work.
Cancel/Verify – A Smarter Home Security System
Every home security system is going to have a false alarm at one time or another. But alarm systems from Smith & Wesson Security Services reduce the chances, while keeping you protected at all times. Our Cancel/Verify feature gives you total control over your home security alarm. When an alarm goes off, many other security alarms will disable the alarm completely when you enter your security code leaving you unprotected. A Smith & Wesson Security System lets you cancel the alarm with the push of a button while still keeping the system armed. In a false alarm, simply press CANCEL to let the monitoring center know an authorized user has canceled the alarm. Or, in a real emergency, press VERIFY, which tell the monitoring center to send help immediately. Cancel/Verify gives you more control over your security system, faster response, protection when you need it most, and better security for you and your family. Home Security Systems, Carbon Monoxide, and Your Home in Texas

Today home alarm systems do a lot more than just protect your home against burglary. Of course this is still the number one use of a home security system, but now you can get even more out of having this type of device in your home. One of the added bonuses of having a system is that you can stay on top of one of the deadliest threats to your health – carbon monoxide poisoning. With simple steps and education in your home, you can feel more secure that this will never be something that your family needs to worry about.
The first step to preventing carbon monoxide poisoning is education. If your family knows what to look out for when it comes to this threat, they will be better equipped to deal with it if there was an incident. Among the symptoms that can occur are confusion, headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness. If you, or anyone in your family, has a combination of these symptoms and suspects carbon monoxide poisoning on any level, they should get medical attention right away. First make sure that everyone gets out of the house and into fresh air immediately, then take anyone who has been effected to the emergency room. If you don’t feel comfortable driving, call 911.
The second step toward prevention is making sure that the devices in your home that could emit this poisonous gas are up to code and are safe to use. All appliances such as stoves, water heaters, kitchen ranges, and any other fuel burning appliance should have a ventilation system that leads directly outside. This includes taking the proper precautions when it comes to your heating system as well. Every year before the weather gets cold and you begin to use the system again, you should have it checked by a professional to ensure that everything is in working order. This goes for fireplaces as well. Be sure that you always open the damper before you start a fire and keep it open until the fire is completely out, including all the ashes. Part of your yearly routine should include having the chimney cleaned and inspected every year. If you check on all of these things at the same time each year, it will be much easier to remember.
The third step is making sure that you are fully equipped and ready to detect carbon monoxide if it were to become an issue. Most homes are equipped with carbon monoxide detectors. This is important, and it’s important to make sure that they have new and fully functioning batteries. This is also where your home alarm system can play a role. Now with some home security companies you can have your carbon monoxide detectors connected to your system and monitored in the same way that they monitor the security of your home. Any sort of disturbance in your home in this way will be immediately reported to the monitoring company so that they can take action on your behalf.

Customize Your Home Security System With Optional Protection Sensors
The most basic home security package comes with more than enough protection coverage to guarantee the safety of the people and place you love the most. Your home is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a home alarm system and four centers across the U.S. These measures of protection make certain that your home is defended at all times, and that if your particular center experiences technical difficulties, another center is ready to meet your home security needs. Whether or not you’re home or incapable of answering your phone, the monitoring center dispatches local authorities to your home to assist you when it matters most. However, by customizing your home alarm system, it can work to protect you from more than just intruders, fire, and medical emergencies.
Smoke and heat sensors. These additional sensors to your home alarm system perform to notify you of a potential fire in your home. They alert you of a possible emergency before any damage is done to your home or valuables. Furthermore, they can be installed all over your home, reaching rooms that your smoke detectors may not be able to.
Carbon monoxide detection. Often referred to as “the silent killer,” carbon monoxide is oftentimes too difficult to identify. Families have suffered tragedy because they were too late in detecting carbon monoxide poisoning. Now, you can upgrade your home security system to better recognize a possible carbon monoxide leak in your home.
Flood sensors. These sensors available with an upgrade to your home alarm can detect rising waters in your home before extensive damage is done. Whether you’re home or at work, these sensors safeguard the interior of your home from water damage during inclement weather.
Freeze sensors. Extreme cold temperatures can be a hazard to your pipes. However, it’s almost impossible for you to know when the freezing temperatures are damaging your pipes. Fortunately, you can upgrade your home alarm system to include freeze sensors that notify you of dangerous cold temperatures.
Communicate by cell. Like most people, you’re never home or perhaps you don’t even have a landline. You need a package that instructs your home security provider to notify you via cell phone of a potential emergency in your home. With this upgrade in place, you’re always in the loop when it comes to the protection of your home and family.
Two-way voice. This feature allows you to communicate with your home security provider via an intercom on your keypad. It detects your voice from up to 75 feet away, enabling you to speak with a representative from anywhere inside or directly outside your home. Whether you’re sick or injured, you can get the help you need from your home alarm system.
There are a variety of ways to customize your home security system, but the mission remains the same: the safeguarding of your home and family. Naturally, both are priceless to you and with optional upgrades to your home alarm, you can better protect them from a variety of potential dangers. Even when you’re at work or on vacation, these extra features are hard at work in your home 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Don’t leave your home without the necessary precautions in place; customize your home security system to protect your home and family from every possible scenario.

Can i self monitor an adt alarm system?
We just purchased a home that has an adt system installed. I called to see the cost of activating & she said it will be $40 a month since we do not have a phone line. I thought about buying a self installed alarm that just chimes when someone breaks in since that is the true thing that really scares burglars anyway. Then i wondered can i set my current adt alarm to do this & not use there monitoring service. Just use there system which is already installed?
